Take Action Thursday: The Opioid Epidemic

Take Action Thursday: Ways that you can help the Opioid Epidemic.

Be a part of the change.

1. Dispose of your medications properly.  Do your part in helping curb the epidemic by ensuring that medications don’t end up in the wrong hands or in the water systems (please don’t flush anything down the drain).  This website will help you find the closest location where you can safely dispose your medications (any prescriptions – not just opioids).

2. Support causes that are fighting this epidemic and helping those affected by it.  Below are  3 organizations that reach out to those who are recovering from addiction, support families and communities that are dealing with this epidemic, and put out really helpful awareness campaigns.  If you’re a coach, teacher, or any sort of community leader, they have great resources for you to check out!

Option 1: Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the devastation that addiction causes families.

Option 2: The Legal Action Center is the only non-profit law and policy organization in the United States whose sole mission is to fight discrimination against people with histories of addiction, HIV/AIDS, or criminal records, and to advocate for sound public policies in these areas.

Option 3: Faces & Voices of Recovery is dedicated to organizing and mobilizing the over 23 million Americans in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, to assisting our families, friends and allies into recovery community organizations and networks, to promoting the right and resources to recover through advocacy and education and to demonstrating the power and proof of long-term recovery.

3. CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES: The Opioid Crisis is an issue that affects people all over.  One of the most effective actions you can take is to contact your representative – specifically your local representatives to find out what is being done in your district or state. You can find both  Your State and National Representative Here.  You can use the script below for either emailing or calling them:

Hello, my name is _________________ and I live in  _________(town or zip code – they want to know you’re from their jurisdiction).  I am a constituent of Senator/Representative ___________, and I’m contacting you today regarding the opioid epidemic.  I am looking to find out what is being done to help stop this growing problem.

You can then offer suggestions (i.e. sponsor a bill regarding policies or to get funding for something) or address why you feel this is an important issue for you/your community.  Feel free to use the information from Simple Source to back you up : More Info Monday,  Two-Sided Tuesday or Worldview Wednesday.

Thank you for your time.
